Why I Never Work With More Than a Handful of Clients at a Time

If you run a small business, you’ve no doubt heard ‘grow’ and ‘scale’ a million times. It feels like that’s all everyone’s chasing. My bookkeeping’s a bit different, though.

In fact, in over 14 years of freelancing, I’ve never taken on more than five clients at a time. It’s a conscious choice I made long ago, because I’ve found that by working with just a handful of clients, I can provide a level of service and dedication that simply isn’t possible with a larger workload.

This benefits not only me but also my clients. Here’s why:

It’s All About a Truly Personal Service

When I work with a small number of clients, I have the time and mental space to get to know you and your business inside and out. I’m not just a contractor who sees you as another client to meet the quota. I take time to learn about your business and what it’s all about.

Knowing your business inside out means I can give you a service that’s truly tailored to your specific needs and adapt to how your business runs.

A Refreshed Bookkeeper is a Better Bookkeeper

Bookkeeping can drive even the nerdiest of bookkeepers nuts (especially during tax time).

That’s why balance is key. If I’m not flat out with work, I can spend time with the fam, catch up with friends, and take care of myself too.

This means I face your books refreshed, focused, and energised. I can think clearly and give your numbers the attention they deserve because I’m not fatigued or constantly stressed

Having a healthy work-life balance has always been something I value. It’s also a professional standard that I believe leads to better work and happier clients.

Avoiding Burnout and Keeping the Passion Alive

I love what I do, and I want to keep it that way.

Have you ever been spread so thin that the work you used to enjoy felt like torture instead?

I stick to working with just a few clients so I can stay passionate about the job. It means better work for you and someone who’s truly got your back.

The Bottom Line

At the end of the day, my decision to work with a select few clients is about quality over quantity. It’s about building strong, lasting relationships and providing a level of service I’m proud of.

I get to do work I love without burning out, and you get a Xero bookkeeper who’s all in and genuinely cares about your success.

Doesn’t that sound like a win-win?

Cheers,

Val
